What are dreadlocks and how did I get here?….
BIO
My name is Ava Kinsland and I am a professional loctician, creator, designer and artist. In 2018 when I moved from my hometown Kansas City, Missouri to Lawrence, Kansas, I decided to create my own business. Two hands and a 1 mm crotchet hook can make a whole lot of magic happen.
The very first dreadlocks I ever did were my own in highschool at the age of 16. I had begun to play around with adding a couple here a couple there, testing out different techniques until I found one that was the best for my hair type. Once I built up strength in my hands I begun to add more and more, eventually evolving into a full head of dreadlocks.
After maintenancing my own for quite some time and giving my friends some of their own, I realized that I could potentially share this experience with people for a living. Being an 18 year old entrepreneur was pretty scary, yet the knowingness that I had the ability to learn and grow doing something that I love, is what kept me going to expand this teaching of self love, cultivation and feeling!
In the past four years I have expanded my client list to over 50+ individuals in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Texas areas. I specialize in the crotchet method and can work on all 12 hair types, classes 1A-4C. I do not use waxes, gels, creams or any harsh chemicals on my clients. *Essential oils are used rarely if needed*.
My practices and skills go beyond a physical form and it is something I express to all future and current clients. When we decide to take on the journey of dreadlock(s), we are not only stepping into a new hairstyle, we are stepping into state of absorption and energy balance. Entering a process that is here to remind us of the greatness of patience and gratitude. The majority of the time I run my business in my home, allowing a much more intimate and intentional session.
I hope to assist you in your dreadlock journey if you choose. Much love.
Dreadlocks are individual matted formations of hair. Dreadlocks can simply occur by not brushing your hair yet they can also be formed by hand. There are two major techniques that can be used, the twist and pin method or the crochet method. The twist and pin works on hair types 3 and 4 while the crochet method works on all hair types 1-4.
The installation process with the crochet method all depends on how long your hair is, how many dreads you are wanting to get, how thick you want your dreads to be and if you are adding extensions or not. Newly installed locks can take up to 8 months - 1 year to mature. This maturing process is when your dreads shrink up a couple inches, loose hairs may pop out, possible ‘loopies’ form and the locks are really just finding a mind of their own before they settle into a formed state. Maintenance is recommended every 3-6 months.
Although dreadlocks may seem like an ‘easy’ hairstyle, if you want them to look nice and mature they take work and patience. I ask all of my clients to palm roll in their free time and make sure roots stay nice and separated by pulling the sections apart.
